I applied as soon as they opened an exchange programme, I was desperate to go anywhere. I was nervous before arriving in Shanghai, but the place felt familiar, as strange as it sounds. I found an apartment, met Lin, everything was beautiful, simple. One morning I got an email from my Chinese college. I was asked not to leave my flat.
